Keeping The Culture Away From Our Thought Thermostats

It is becoming clearer that many Christians are allowing politically driven news, social issues and other medium to control or heavily influence their emotions. This post reminds us to let God’s word determine our focus.

What if your neighbor just walked into your home, adjusted your A/C and told you that is where he liked to keep it at his place? It is likely you wouldn’t even let him get that far before asking him what the heck he’s doing barging into your house. Yet, if somehow he managed to adjust your A/C, you’d probably kick him out and readjust it to a temperature of your choosing.
.
Tell me. Who or what are you allowing to adjust your mental and spiritual temperature without your express permission? In other words, are you checking the narratives at the door? Do you have the TV playing for hours on end even when you’re not actually watching it? Do you realize that your subconscious mind is absorbing all of that information? Are you truly checking the narratives at the door?
.
Are the narratives that are entering established by or clearly supported with solid biblical principles? Are the narratives glorifying to God or are they glorifying to man? Do they point people to Christ and to heaven or do they focus people’s hearts on things of this world? Are they biblically moral? Or are they blatantly immoral? Do they promote a decent society? Or do they promote the destruction of a society?
.
Proverbs 2:2-9 says…

“Make your ear attentive to wisdom, Incline your heart to understanding; for if you cry for discernment, lift your voice for understanding; if you seek her as silver and search for her as for hidden treasures; then you will discern the fear of the LORD and discover the knowledge of God. For the LORD gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding. He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk in integrity, guarding the paths of justice, and He preserves the way of His godly ones. Then you will discern righteousness and justice and equity and every good course.”

Just about everything and everyone, from mainstream media to educators and entertainers, and from political pundits to social strategists, are at work 24-7 spinning stories that immortalize the immoral and scandalize the sacred. And that is why we need to keep Christ in the conversation. That is why we need to let His word, not this world, set the narratives.
.
And while it is alright and even often necessary to address the narratives of the world, we must be sure to do so from a hermeneutically sound biblical perspective. But we must NEVER let those who want little or nothing to do with the real Jesus and His rightly divided word of truth tell us what to focus on.
.
NEVER LET THEM redefine words and logical terms to mean things that are illogical. NEVER LET THEM decide what the headlines of our hearts should be. NEVER LET THEM make us place condemnation where God has removed it. And NEVER LET THEM tell the Church what its mission should be.
.
Open your Bibles. Get on your knees. Remember the Great Commission. Remember the Great Commandment. And go BE THE NARRATIVE.
.
Let no one but God adjust your thought thermostat. His word will tell you what ain’t cool, and what should burn you up, as well as how to keep cool when things really start to heat up.
.
So, has someone (e.g. politicians, police, TV personalities) or something (e.g. race, riches, false religion), other than God and His rightly divided word set your mental and spiritual temperature? If so, humble yourself and pray to God for readjustment today.
.
God bless, beloved.
