Justice Misunderstood: Why We Must Not Let the Masses Guide Our Message

God doesn’t call things just or unjust because they just are. Things are just or unjust because God says they are. This post reflects on that premise to look at why we must stay focused on preaching the gospel of Christ.

Proverbs 28:5 says that, “Evil people don’t understand justice, but those who follow the LORD understand completely”. Simply stated, those who are not born-again in Christ do not truly possess the full capacity to understand what is and is not just. I will return to my reason for presenting this verse after making a couple of other important points.
.
Apart from Christ, all sinful human beings ultimately operate on a principle that is diametrically opposed to God. Even at our best, sin still causes us to determine that something is right or wrong based on our flawed perceptions of the end result or the effect it has upon us or someone we feel we should be concerned about. Fallen humanity’s philosophy goes something like this….

“If I think that it harms me or someone else who I feel does not deserve to be harmed, then it is unjust.”.

And while on the surface that may appear to be a very noble thought, such a perspective unfortunately leaves room for a sort of justice that literally creates a vacuum for a variety of injustices.
.
For example, a woman who espouses the “MY BODY. MY CHOICE.” philosophy equips herself with the flexibility of conscience to kill the baby in her womb. She now “justifiably” violates her first principle of injustice—harming someone who doesn’t deserve harm. And why? Because she now sees it as harmful to her career. Or because she doesn’t love or like the father of the child. Or because she doesn’t want the man who doesn’t want kids to leave her. Or because she can’t afford to take care of a child. Or because she was raped, and wasn’t planning on having a child.
.
Whatever the reason, she is able to make the quantum leap from not harming an innocent person to harming an innocent person simply because the pivotal principle of her idea of justice was her own thoughts and feelings rather than absolute truth. If her philosophy was based on absolute truth, she would see that taking the innocent life in her womb would be a clear violation of her first principle of injustice.
.
Now let’s briefly look at God’s view of justice (which is really His view of everything). It goes something like this….

Seek the LORD while He may be found; call to Him while He is near. Let the wicked one abandon his way and the sinful one his thoughts; let him return to the LORD, so He may have compassion on him, and to our God, for He will freely forgive. For My thoughts are not your thoughts, and your ways are not My ways. This is the LORD’s declaration. For as heaven is higher than earth, so My ways are higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts” (Isaiah 55:6-9)..

Why didn’t I choose a passage where God mentions the word “justice”? After all, the Bible uses the word “justice” well over a hundred times. Surely, we could refer to any number of biblical contexts to delve into how God sees justice. But when it comes to understanding, isn’t it better to get to the heart of a matter?
.
And here is God’s heart on justice and all other matters. God wants the wicked, who deserve the justice of eternal damnation, to abandon his sinful ways and thoughts, and turn to Him in repentance because He is waiting to freely forgive. God is just, but also infinite in mercy.
.
And so when it comes to justice, God does not call things just or unjust because they just are. No, my friend, things are just or unjust because God says they are. In other words, He determines justice. And those who truly follow Him avoid the justice they deserve, and obtain mercy and gain access to the complete understanding of justice.
.
And, again, one of the foremost principles of justice from God’s perspective is that all of us deserve hell. Bible passages like Romans 3:9-18 teach us that. Yet God, in His infinite grace and mercy, willingly saves and justifies any and all who truly trust in His only begotten Son. And passages like Romans 3:21-26 teach us that.
.
So what is my reason for presenting Proverbs 28:5? It is to inspire the saints to do a bit more biblical and critical thinking about how we should (or perhaps should not) respond to the chaos and turmoil that is rising in America. Again, the verse says, “Evil people don’t understand justice, but those who follow the LORD understand completely”. This fact begs a very important question for consideration…
.
If evil (or unsaved) people don’t truly understand justice because their ways are not God’s ways and their thoughts are not God’s thoughts, then why, when the gospel of Christ is needed like never before, are so many citizens of heaven and churches supporting the world’s emotionally driven activisms and movements?
.
Many of these Proverbs 28:5 sorts of “evil people” are decrying the injustice of one man’s murder, while demonstrating for the right to murder millions of babies. Many of these “evil people” are fighting against the alleged injustices of income equality for women and “toxic masculinity”, while fighting for the right to let men defeat and even physically debilitate women in sports competitions. Many of these “evil people” protest and riot over the relatively low rate of blacks being killed by cops, while failing to address the relatively out-of-control rate of black on black murders and crimes that happen daily throughout the country.
.
Yet, it is expected that they should be so hypocritical because, as Proverbs 28:5 says, “evil people don’t understand justice…” The evidence is overwhelming and compelling.
.
Is the rampant ongoing violence and destruction across the country not proof enough that their ways and God’s ways are not the same? Is the hypocritical fact that the Black Lives Matter organization clearly only focuses on black lives lost at the hands of cops, while carrying out a mission statement that diametrically opposes God’s authority and order about family, marriage, and gender not proof enough? Are the continual efforts of the media to try to manipulate us, instead of just reporting the news not proof enough?
.
Is the continually exposed race-baiting/pandering stratagems of a Democrat party that pushes the most godless legislation and remains virtually silent about the violence, lawlessness, and destruction sweeping the country not proof enough? And is the virtual silence of a Senate-Majority Republican party that even has a Republican in the Oval Office, yet which allows the Democrat minority to get away with so much wrong not proof enough?
.
What more proof do we need that the Churches should avoid “taking the lead” in social/political issues conveniently stirred up and made viral by “evil people who do not understand justice”? What more proof do we need that this sort of chaos is cyclical and tied to election cycles? What more proof do we need that we should instead be continually pointing these people TO JESUS CHRIST?
.
What more proof do we need that the soul-saving gospel of Christ is the issue that is preeminent on God’s mind? Is it not enough that it was so preeminent that He gave His Son to die for it? Is it not enough that it was so preeminent that throughout the church’s history, even to this day, God allowed countless faithful christians to be martyred for it?
.
Saints, the unsaved people of the world do not consult God when they choose what they will fight for next. And because they are already taken captive by Satan to do his will, they are liable to turn on a dime, and leave us out there, fighting battles God never even intended for us to fight. There is a reason why Jesus said His kingdom is not of this world.
.
And people who do not understand justice can easily be confused by the god of this world. And that is why we should not yoke ourselves to their causes, but seek to lead them to take Christ’s yoke upon them. Then shall they truly find rest for their currently restless souls. As a side note, might I also add that we simply need to stop worrying so much about offending people who live each day offending God?
.
Two thousand years ago, Christ gave us a clear mission that is now more needed than ever before. And that was (and is) the mission of continually going into all the world, preaching the gospel of salvation and making disciples for Christ (see Matthew 28:18-20). This is the commission we received from the risen Captain of our Salvation, who suffered and died for us (Hebrews 2:10). And we that live for Him are to faithfully carry it out until He returns.
.
We have the true remedy for racism, abortion, homosexuality, police brutality, political corruption, and all other sins of the heart. We have God’s view of justice written on our hearts. So why on earth are we playing around with the bandages and placebos of social/political activism, when we personally know the Physician who heals anyone from sin-sickness who trusts in Him?
.
And why are we going so far out of our way to show sinners how much we can empathize with them, when they go so far out of their ways to show how much they despise our God. Only the all-powerful gospel of salvation can drill through the wall of each sin-hardened heart. Instead of kneeling for them, we need to tell them to kneel before their Maker.
.
It is high time to prove that we are those who “understand completely” that if God gave us the justice we really deserved, we’d all be burning in hell. God is temporarily extending a mercy that can only be received through faith. And the last time I checked, that faith still only comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God (Romans 10:14-17).
.
So, for Christ’s sake, preach the word, saints! The newest newborn believer, at the moment God saves his wretched soul, gains more understanding of justice than all of the greatest legal minds that ever existed apart from Christ! I pray you understand now why we must not let the masses guide our message.
.
God bless, beloved.
