Is God Really Unlike An ATM?

These days, God is showing me like never before that believing Him is the absolute best thing we can do! Years ago, someone somewhere cleverly said that, “God is not like an ATM that we can use to get whatever we want”.

And though I am not what is affectionately known as a “prosperity preacher,” I tend to disagree with at least part of that statement for at least a couple of reasons:

  • First of all, the last time I checked my bank account (at the ATM), I couldn’t just get whatever I wanted there either—I wanted to withdraw about fifteen Grand, but to my surprise, that exceeded my daily limit! (Ha-ha!) So that catch-phrase begins to break down right about there for me!

Our Enemies Often Know Something We Won’t… But Should

Where are you as you read this?  Are you in the midst of one of the best days of your life? It’s likely you would be doing something else if you really felt today was going your way.

Espionage
So, let’s be honest about the fact that we just don’t like it when things aren’t going our way. Yet if we would really take a moment to think back, we all probably could think of a time or two when we ended up being quite glad that things didn’t go our way after all.

And that is the reason you need to hear what you are reading today. The Lord wants to remind you of a critical piece of information that you must always remember if you are going to continue living a fulfilling Christian life. Let’s look at an example of how, if we’re not careful, our likes can outweigh our loves and cause us to be miserable; God does not want us to live in misery.

Trust ME! I Got This!

What do first-time skydivers on tandem jumps, open-heart surgery patients, and 300 people on a Boeing 777 trans-atlantic flight have in common? They are all trusting at least one person with their lives.

And what could be more important to you than your own life? Without it, well, you’re nothing, right?

A first-time skydiver in training can never again go home to her husband and children, if her tandem trainer doesn’t make sure their parachute is properly opened before they reach the ground. The open-heart surgery patient can do nothing to prevent a fatal error during the procedure, while he is in a medically induced sleep. And neither can 400 people do anything to make sure that the pilot makes it safely from New York to London, when even the slightest miscalculation during something as simple as landing could prove disastrous.

Of GOD and GEICO Commercials

Genius! Pure Genius! That’s pretty much all that I can say about whoever is behind the last few series of GEICO Insurance commercials. From a camel who is stoked about hump-day, to Old MacDonald spelling “cow”, c-o-w—e-i-e-i-o, all I can say is “Dag nab it!” Why didn’t I think of that?

The Old MacDonald commercial comes from the “Did You Know?” series. I mean, who writes this stuff? It is so catchy! I’ve had GEICO insurance for years, and for some strange reason, I don’t think I’ll be switching to another company any time soon!

Needless to say, it is a very successful ad campaign. But it also speaks to a growing problem in the world, and, worse, in Christianity today. The problem is that with the growing ease of access to all sorts of information via digital media, everybody thinks they know everything! Hardly anyone wants to be told something they don’t know, or something they perhaps may have once known, forgot, but now desperately need to know.

Your Eternal Security (Y.E.S.)

I recently saw a scene in a movie on the Pont des Arts or Passerelle des Arts pedestrian bridge in Paris which crosses the Seine River. I was intrigued by the love locks left on it by pedestrians, so I decided to look it up.

A love lock or love padlock is a padlock which sweethearts lock to a bridge, fence, gate, or similar public fixture to symbolize their love. Typically the sweethearts’ names or initials are inscribed on the padlock, and its key is thrown away to symbolize unbreakable love. Since the 2000s, love locks have proliferated at an increasing number of locations worldwide. They are often treated by municipal authorities as litter or vandalism, and are costly to remove (Wikipedia).

Those locks reminded me of another wonderful aspect of who Jesus Christ is to everyone who trusts in Him. He is our “bridge” across the infinite divide between a fallen earth and a heavenly Father. He “publicly affixed” Himself to a cruel cross where He died to “symbolize” His un-dying love for us.
